Checkin' In...

Please take a moment away from reading The No Complaining Rule to share with the group:
  • Who you are and where you work.
  • What inspired you to sign up for the virtual book club?
  • What do you hope to get out of the club?
Look forward to us getting to know each other.

  1. Who is tonya thames taylor? tonya thames taylor appreciates her life, her hubby, Anthony, her three cats, and her large southern (Mississippi) family. She relishes in jazz, southern food, and laughter. She is taking a Spanish class at WCU and an advanced sewing class at Jo-Anne Fabrics. She travels extensively. She believes in Jesus Christ. At WCU, she is an Associate Professor of History and Assistant Dept. Chair, Creator and Director of the African American Minor, Chair of the Multicultural Faculty Commission, and Chair of the Executive Committee of the Frederick Douglass Institute. She likes advising students snd attending events where students show their leadership and talent.

Why Book Club? As tonya explained in the Welcome to the Virtual Book Club link, she joined the book club for several reason: (1) interest in book; (2) interest in blogging thoughts about a book; (3) previous book club experience; and (4) participating in a corporate, university-wide book club.

The gain? tonya hopes to gain (1) insight in colleagues' interests; (2) information found in book; (3) insights shared by members; and(4) collegiality fostered by a shared experience with various campus constituencies.

  2. I joined the book club, because I saw the book one of my co workers received in inner office mail and I glanced over it before I gave it to her and it caught my interest. I've never been part of a book club mainly because I never thought I'd be able to attend the meetings that are usually a part of being a member, in order to discuss the book with others, but an online book club I definately can do! How do I go about getting a copy of the book?

  3. * Who you are and where you work.
Hey! I'm Vickie McCoy and I'm an Assistant Professor in the Counseling & Educational Psychology Graduate Division. My office is out at the GBC off of Boot Road, so I rarely get to participate in "main campus" events.

    * What inspired you to sign up for the virtual book club?

I am really excited to be part of something with other faculty members that does not require me to drive to main campus and try to find parking (because we GBC folks don't get Parking Permits, so we use lose of quarters or pay $10 fines when we visit y'all!!!)

    * What do you hope to get out of the club?

I'm using this club as a springboard (an excuse) to read outside of my discipline and enjoy the perspectives of others. I'm also not technologically inclined, so I think that learning to "blog" in a virtual world is a healthy step in a growth direction for me.

  4. Hi Everybody, I'm Bob Truitt and I'm a Web Technical Specialist on the Web Team in Anderson Hall.

I joined the book club because I really enjoyed "The Energy Bus," another book by John Gordon. "The No Complaining Rule" has proven to be good as well.

As far as what I expect, I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on the book and getting some good discussions going!

  5. Loved reading your backgrounds (what cool and diverse backgrounds) and interests in the club. Sharing, learning, avoiding parking :-), contemplating, and exploring possible changed behaviors are all reasons this format is being piloted so I am glad to see the alignment. I too enjoy books told in the parable format with powerful and reinforcing messages.

If you have further suggestions to make this meaningful for you and the group, I am certainly open to ideas. Keep blogging!!!
